Fighter Jets Youtube - A French winemaker holds the title of the world's largest collection of private fighter jets. Michel Pont, a vintner living in the Burgundy region of France, grows wine grapes and collects fighter planes. Pont's collection includes aircraft from the early jet age, such as the Royal Air Force's Meteor fighter, to the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Pont, a former race car driver, bought 12 hectares (29 acres) in the heart of French wine country. The property has a castle built in 1340. The surrounding land was initially not very valuable, but after clearing it Pont set aside four hectares for grape cultivation and two to three hectares for airplanes. He had his priorities straight from the start.

Pont has 110 aircraft, mostly fighter jets but a few military helicopters. His collection is diverse. Chronologically it is the U.K. Starting with Gloster Meteor, the first fighter jet of and was the only Allied fighter jet to see combat service during World War II. Next was the F-86 Saber in Luftwaffe markings that served in West Germany in the 1950s. There is a whole set of fighters from the 60s and 70s, including the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, the English Electric Lightning, the F-100 Super Sabre, and the Mirage III fighter.

The collection includes some rare finds. The Republic F-105 Thunderchief is one of the largest fighter jets in service with the U.S. Air force and workhorse of the Vietnam War sat in the collection. It is unclear how the Frenchman acquired one of the rarest fighter planes in the museum's collections. There are several fighters from the former Soviet Union, including one Sukhoi Su-7 "Fitter" ground attack aircraft and several Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-21 "Fishbed" fighters. It was bought from former Warsaw Pact countries like Poland and Hungary. An unidentified aircraft was purchased from Djibouti.

The newest—and hard to get—fighter in Pont's inventory is the F-16A Fighting Falcon fighter. According to Pont, he befriended a general in the Belgian Air Force and expressed interest in purchasing a Belgian F-16. Unfortunately, the US usually gets the final say on how American-made equipment is disposed of, even by its closest allies, and for a long time the sympathetic answer from the Belgian Air Force was a resounding "no." Eventually Pont got his fighter plane.

Pont's collection received the Guinness Book of World Records seal of approval. Unfortunately, collecting collections of military equipment like this is harder than ever. Older aircraft, especially those operated by foreign countries, are relatively easy to obtain, while more modern US Air Force and Navy aircraft are difficult, if not impossible, to acquire for private collectors. It's hard to imagine private collectors getting their hands on one even though the F/A-18C Hornet is no longer flying on active duty concerns about technology transfer and parts finding their way onto the international black market.

Pont Castle in Savigny-les-Beaune, with its collection of warplanes, is open daily from 9am to 12pm. and from 2 pm to 5:30 p.m.
